Love that you can find something for the whole family at @cardiffmarket1891 My first try at @agtukkatuk in the market, with a build your own curry. A choice of base from fries, pilaf or wholegrain rice Then your curry of chicken, beef rib or a vegan option for Then you can also choose to add some extra toppings for a small fee of £1 for the vegan option, £1.50 for Keralan Fried Chicken (absolute steal!!) Or chilli prawns. I went for the pilaf rice, beef rib curry with extra topping of Keralan Fried chicken. With a can of Fanta I still had change from £10, which I thought was pretty reasonable to be fair. The curry had a mild heat, but bursting with flavour. The option to have an extra topping was a great idea too, as I love the KFC, which added a nice bit of crunch to the dish. Gutted I didn't ask for 1/2 and 1/2 now, not sure if that's on the secret menu, but I'll have to go back to find out. You can also get a full plate of their KFC for £10 and it looked like an absolute beast of a plate, as the guy in front of me had it. Well didn't we have a surprise random day out last Well didn't we have a surprise random day out last Sunday. We left the house, with absolutely no plan on where to go, just out the house with thr dog. Newport ended up being Gloucester and we just drove till I found a decent place for a walk for Derek. As chance would have it, there were about 3 Road closures heading to the place in question, so we gave up and went to the pub. No idea where we were, we just called in the closest one and what a treat it was called The Cock Inn. Proper oldy worldy inside and totally not what u was expecting. With a roaring fire, exposed original brick and wood throughout, it was well over 100 years old I'd say. Derek started performing as there were a few other dogs in there, so we went out the beer garden. Luckily enough we were the only idiots to sit outside in the cold, so we were able to let him off for a run around. Not only that, they had some pig styes out there with some Gloucester spot pigs in there, which @llioangharad loved. We were going to head somewhere for lunch, but as it was nearing 3pm we decided to just grab food there. Glad we did too, one pork and one beef roast, with all the trimmings. The staff were super friendly and let us eat out there too, so we could keep Derek off the lead. It was a mammoth dinner too, with 4 slices or meat and loads of veg. It was a decent roast too, if I was being picky, I would have liked a bit of crackling with my pork as it's my fav part of a pork dinner. I'd definitely recommend popping in, whether it's for a pint, a warm by the fire or for a good feeding. We managed to find a road that was still open to Mallards Pike, which was our first choice place for a trek with the dog. So glad we stuck with it and found a way there. They've got a go ape next door, there's trails for biking and some lush scenic walks whether you want to take the pooch or not. Parking was quite reasonable from what I could remember too. It was proper fresh out and luckily, the cafe was still open by the car park, so we grabbed a big warm cup of hot chocolate to take on the walk around. We didn't get there till quite late, so there wasn't much sunlight left to explore properly, but will be back
I think I must be the last resident of Cardiff to I think I must be the last resident of Cardiff to try @heathcock_cardiff but today I finally popped in for lunch. I've followed them since they opened which must have been over 3 years ago, so yes I know the food looks and sounds amazing, but I was worried about parking, as I stress out if I drive somewhere and can't park. I didn't realise how close it was to Landaff high street though. Anyway, we called in for lunch and only on the off chance, as we were passing on the A48 after a trip to the auctions and luckily they had a table, with 15 mins mins left for the kitchen, when I called. We had some sourdough and butter for initial nibs as standard. House baked, although not sure in house in house or from their bakery (which I have been to) in Cowbridge. I would have liked a little wedge more than the 3 between the two of us but good bread none the less. Having never been, it's always hard to judge how many plates to order, but we're recommended 2-3 per person and maybe some sides. We opted for the following: 🍴 Baked celeriac, kale and red onion 🍴 Beetroot, pickled walnut and goats cheese 🍴 Venison mince on duck fat toast 🍴 Crispy pigs cheek, chicken, mustard and pickled apple 🍴 Partridge Kiev 🍴 Confit potato 🍴 Baked Alaska 🍴 Buttermilk pudding and honeycomb No complaints on any of the plates we had to be fair. A generous plate of mixed coloured earthy Beetroot, creamy goats cheese and a nice crunch of the walnuts. I love celeriac and there were both roasted and puried, with added sliths of Beetroot disks. The venison toast was rich, meaty with a kick of heat from the horseradish. Death by 1000 cuts of potato, OMG that potato confit was to die for. Just gutted we only ordered one between us. Crispy and savoury on the outside yet melting on the tongue. Partridge Kiev? Who would have thought. Not even M & S have pulled that one out of the bag for Xmas. The crackling on the pigs cheek was glas like, but the juicy underlayer of succulent fat made it extra special. The apple help cut through the fat and loved the mustardy chickory. That baked Alaska was a bit naughty for dessert too 😍
Did you know that the Whitehouse in the US was mor Did you know that the Whitehouse in the US was more than likely named after a farmhouse in little old Llanboidy, in Carmarthenshire. On our recent tour around Carmarthenshire, we had the pleasure of visiting @jabajakvineyard2021 . A vineyard, with restaurant and rooms to stay the night. We arrived for evening meal and even though the sun was drenching the vines of the last of the sun, it was more than a bit fresh out. A bit earlier in the year and the patio, would make a lush setting for sipping on the house grown wine on offer at Jabajak,  whilst tasting your way through the delicious food menu. You really wouldn't believe, you're sitting either side of farmland in South West Wales - you'd be forgiven thinking you're somewhere in the Med, soaking up the summer sun, amongst luscious green backdrop. Firstly, we were narrated through the history of not only the vineyard, but of wine production in Wales. Did you know that Sparkling wine was created in the UK and not by Dom Perignon in Champagne? Those sneaky French with their clever marketing.  We got to try both the red and white varieties, from the last vintage, but they were waiting on delivery of the latest production. Their sparking wine has won some very prestigious awards too, with only the last few left on sale, at the vineyard only. The food surprised both of us too, to be honest. We really didn't know what to expect, as we hadn't studied the menu like we sometimes do. @llioangharad said they were one of the best scallop dishes she's ever had and she knows her scallops! I went for the game terrine to start things off and a very generous portion, with a well balanced chutney. I had the most delicious lamb for mains. Crispy rendered fat, with a crunchy layer of sea salt & pepper, cranberry & port jus. The meat was cooked perfectly too. Llio carried on the fish with seabass and an orange aioli. Two fillets, with crispy skin and tender white flesh. Both both mains served with dauphinoise potatoes and seasonal greens. Desserts were Scicilian lemon mess for me and grilled coconut rum pineapple, with vanilla ice cream and maple for Llio. That pineapple 👌🔥

There were some right beauties aging in the salt agers in the back, both beef on the rib and pork. I'd not seen pork salt aged before, so has to chuck a few Chops in my bag. Also on the menu we're some lamb barnsley Chops and that mammoth rib of beef. I was going to have the meat for in the week, but as the weather was so lush on Sunday, I decided to cook it all up for lunch. Paried with some new potatoes, salad from veggies picked up across from the butchers, including some Tokyo turnips, which I sliced raw in the salad and then sautéed the green leaves with some cavalo nero, garlic and butter. Oh and not forgetting a punchy homemade chimichuri. Just look at the puffed up rind on those pork Chops. Crispiest chop rinds I've ever cooked. Anyone else tried Richards? After a good ole wander around The National Botani After a good ole wander around The National Botanical Gardens with Derek (and @llioangharad) we called in for a well earned lunch, at @polyncarmarthen, which was just around the corner. After being given the lunch special and the a la carte menu to mull over, I was pretty impressed with the whisky menu on offer. Well I should say, whisky wall 👌 It was lunch and I don't normally have a whisky for lunch, but thought I'd have a curveball with my pidgeon starter, instead of the usual red wine. The pidgeon came served with pearl barley risotto, salsa verde, celeriac and Pomegranate dressing, with crispy bacon. Slight char on the pidgeon, but still juicy and tender inside. Silky smooth celeriac, with nuggets of the root, for texture. A herbaceous lick of salsa verde, with a pop of fresh Pomegranate jewels. Llio went for the venison ragu with papardelle, parmesan and pangritatta. First impressions, was wow what a portion! This generous plate of flat ribbons of fresh pasta, marbled with equally generous flecks of local venison and a rich ragu. This start would probably be enough for some as a starter. For mains, I opted for the belly pork. Again, I was positively surprised at the portion of meat on the plate, but everything is of the utmost quality, not just size over substance. The perfectly crisp, pork belly skin was accompanied by roast Cauliflower puree, buttered Chinese leaf, black pudding bon bon and apple. Sweet puree with a oodles of savoury gravy. I really didn't need the triple cooked chips either. But gravy and chips 😍 Llio went for lamb shoulder, potato terrine, peas, mint and black garlic yogurt. Again, two generous portions of meat. Slow cooked lamb parcels and the crispy yet tender potato terrine, with what looked like a thousand layers. It was a toss up, who was to order the sticky toffee pudding. I lost, but I didn't have one the might before. I still got to try a bit and the addition of the walnuts and pecans, was a nice twist. It was the dark chocolate mouse, burnt orange puree, honeycomb and chantilly cream for me. I paired this with a really delicious Californian orange muscat - a refreshing sweet dessert wine.
Well, what a couple of days stay we at @browns_lau Well, what a couple of days stay we at @browns_laugharne in Laugharne last week. We've stopped in Laugharne for an hour, on the way back from West Wales once and popped our head into Brown's, but what a transformation they've made there since then. The Hotel is dog friendly, which was great news for us with Derek in tow. We were treated to the epic suite on the top floor, which Derek loved, as he could spy out of both the back and front window down to below. The bed was absolutely huge and has made us put this size bed at the top of our Christmas list this year, especially with the D Dog taking up so much room, when he's sprawled out width ways. The room was so spacious, from the bathroom with roll-top bath, leather sofa and coffee table, leather desk chairs in front of a set out chess board, and a seating in front of both windows, if you decide to gaze out into the Laugharne surroundings, taking inspiration from none other than Dylan Thomas. Did I mention Brown's was Dylan's favourite watering hole, in days gone by? Rumour has it, his contact number he gave out was the hotels itself, so he was never far from Laugharne's best known pub. The food was everything I could have dreamed of too. With excellent brecwast options of full Welsh, eggs Benedict, poached eggs with bacon, laverbread and cockles. If you like your steaks, @dextersatbrowns restaurant have you more than covered. Locally sourced beef, aged on site in the aging fridges whether it's a rump or ribeye for one or if sharing is more your thing, there's chateaubriand or cote de beouf depending on your budget or how hungry you are. Ours was about 900g! The Dexters restaurant doesn't allow dogs, but we were allowed to still dine from the menu in the bar and we were allowed to bring him down for a cheeky sausage for breakfast too and the staff were great with Derek. If you're not thr biggest dog fan, Brown's does keep a couple of rooms dog free. Brown's makes the perfect retreat for Dylan Thomas pilgrimages and I couldn't resist sitting in his fav spot by the window sampling a Welsh whisky.

I mean who doesn't like a finger buffet with their pineapple huacatay and purple corn tepache 💁‍♂️ @nightjar has been on my list of London cocktail bars for a while and I made sure I ticked it off on my last visit to the big smoke. Located a stones throw away from Old Street underground, but blink and you'd miss this basement speakeasy bar, behind the unassuming thick wooden doors, with its small golden plaque. If smoking has still been allowed in bars in the UK, I could have imagine being transcended to a 1920's Parisian jazz cafe with the art deco interior, dimmed lights and prohibition era rare and vintage spirits. Sadly the band where walking in to setup as we were leaving, so we would have has the full effect. Voted in the top 3 of the 50 cocktail bars in the world many times, you just know you're going to be treated to something a bit different here. If drinking bottles of spirits from the decade you were born doesn't entice you, the cocktail menu also featured cocktails inspired by the ages. First up for me was the Aztec Tepache from the pre-prohibition era of 1600 - 1918. I always get drawn to the fermented pineapple beverage if I ever see it on a menu, as I've attempted it many a time at home, with more field attempts than successes. This was a tequila based drink with tepache, chimotto and chamomile liquer, fino Sherry and lime. Next up for me was a Barrel Aged Japanese Sling - roku  gin,  copalli white  rum,  old  duff  genever, guava & pineApple  juice,  capuacu  curd, cherry  kriek  lambic  top. Llio went for the Name of the samurai and the soul kiss, both of them whisky numbers. If the drink nibbles get you in the mood for something a bit more substantial, they also do a snack menu. {AD-Invite} Well what a feast we had on Saturday {AD-Invite} Well what a feast we had on Saturday evening at @bunchofgrapescf37 in Pontypridd. Having grown up visiting the pub, I've loved seeing how it has evolved since going there for Sunday lunch when I was a kid, to what it is now. I'm happy enough just popping in for a pint of the 11 craft beers on draft and keg by the fire with the dog, but if you do fancy a real treat, then you have to head into the restaurant for a good feeding. We last visited the Bunch for food just before Xmas last year, but with restrictions well and truly in full swing, they quite rightly were running with a limited menu. Not that we didn't find something delish on the menu, mind. The restaurant is running at full capacity now & I loved some of the new items on the menu, from slow cooked cured meats and my fav... all the pickles & fermented & ferments. With a pretty stocked menu of starters, sandwiches/burgers, mains, dessert & sides, we were spoiled for choice. Whilst we waited, was bread obvs. In house baked bread, served with fermented seaweed butter. Thickly sliced crusty cob with a umami packed sliths of butter. To drink, I went for a pint from my favourite Bristol brewer @lefthandedgiant #RIPSmallBarCardiff For starters I was swaying towards the cockles, leeks and pancetta again, but I had that on our last visit. It's been a favourite on the menu for some time I've heard, but I opted for: braised shoulder of lamb ravioli, lemon verbena & garlic jus, with fermented cherry tomato salsa. Two neatly packed parcels of lamb, with a fragrant herby jus. Llio opting for the pan fried salt cod, wild mushrooms & samphire, pickled onions and crispy fish skin.  Not that I didn't like the ravioli, but I preferred the fish starter to mine. The thing I was most excited about on the menu, happened on the sides funnily enough of all places. A plate of 5 ferments & kimchi. I love a bit of funk and they went well with both mains, although I'd happyily eat a plate with some bread and butter. I was fancying something meaty for mains & I do love a bit of salt beef. Seeing that it came with horseradish mash, frickles, dill salsa verde & mustard aioli, I was torn again. 1/2
I still can't believe one of the best reuben sandw I still can't believe one of the best reuben sandwiches I've ever had (like in the world ever) was in an unassuming doggy play centre in Llanrhumney yesterday at @scruffypupscdf Perfect day out for us, with Derek chasing and sniffing everything in sight and us chomping down on mammoth wedges of salt beef, stacked in toasted white bread, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, pickles and Russian dressing. £10 with a side of crisps and a drink, what are you actually waiting for? This was probably my favourite beer coming from th This was probably my favourite beer coming from the @mikkellerbaghaven series The Art of Decadence - Blend 4 🍷 A Danish Wild Ale with red vineyard peaches, cherries, grapes, vanilla beans and noyaux aged between 12-18 months in Oak barrels. It comes in at 7% abv with loads of fruit but not too sour, compared to the Spontans from @mikkellerbeer . I could neck (and will) the whole bottle, where I usually struggle on anything more than 2/3 of a pint of a sour beer.
Love, love, love using up leftover salsa verde wit Love, love, love using up leftover salsa verde with eggs for brunch. A generous dollop, slathered over thick sourdough ( @alexgoochbaker malted loaf here) eggs done how you like, but the yolk has to be runny. I'm not the best at poached, so I usually go for fried and some chives on top. I didn't go shopping for ingredients for the salsa Verde yesterday, so tried to make do with what I had lying around instead and didn't have any fresh parsley. Salsa Verde recipe (what I had to hand) Ingredients ☆ Small bunch of fresh mint ☆ Small bunch of rocket ☆ Small bunch of fresh corriander (use parsley if you have it) ☆ 3 teaspoon of dried mixed herbs (mine included parsley, marjoram, oregano, basil) ☆ 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar ☆ 2 teaspoons dijon mustard ☆ 4 green pitted olives ☆ 3 teaspoons capers ☆ 1 fresh red chilli or flakes for desired spice level ☆ 1 clove of garlic ☆ A good few glugs of olive oil. Cancelled my subscription last month after over 2 years, which I was a bit emosh about, but price has steadily crept up since they ditched the cheaper subscription box and the extra charges since brexit makes it hard to justify £85 for 8-10 beers, no matter how good they are. Been loving this Olive Rocoto chilli sauce that I Been loving this Olive Rocoto chilli sauce that I picked up from Welsh Dragon Chilli at @riversiderealfood a few weeks back. Not much left to be fair, as I've been putting it everything from breakfast eggs to supper. A fruity yet spicy green sauce from the olive rocoto chilli pepper cultivated by the guys at Welsh Dragon Chilli themselves. The sauce is speckled with the unique black seeds. Have you seen the latest @honestburgers  collab w Have you seen the latest @honestburgers  collab with Cardiff favourite @brotherthaiuk ? {AD - pr invite} Honest Burger have teamed up with everyone's favourite Cardiff Thai Streetfood vendor @brotherthaiuk They've swapped out the usual beef, for a crispy wedge and I mean absolute wedge of chicken thigh I had in my bun, with thick cut Thai pickled cucumber, a sweet, sticky and mu ping glaze, sriracha mayo, lime leaf, Brother Thai slaw and red chillis. My chicken was so big, I had to fold it up to stuff my in my Chops. The burger comes with their lovely crisped to perfection fries, tossed in rosemary. We managed to get their elusive beef and bacon gravy for dunking too, which I was well happy about, as Cardiffians must have been necking it by the pint in the past, as they've been sold out my last two visits. A bowl of slaw, to cleanse the tongue receptors between bites of the chicken burg and the side of buffalo wings, with lashings of Frank's red hot sauce and herby ranch dressing, topped with shoestring fries. The sauces were lush for mopping up with thr fries too. Derek, approved of the fries and had a lipsmaking time with a cheeky few dunks of gravy, to stop him barking. Situated next door to arguably the best burgers in London with @bleeckerburger You've got the ultimate market 2 courser. You choose your size from two standard or large, pick your base fruit, which then gets topped in crumble. I went for a standard size with rhubarb layer of fruit. Youcan upgrade with a couple of other options for a small extra charge and I opted for vanilla custard and a freshly piped pink meringue, which is torched in front of you. Finally there's a choice of some complimentary toppings such as nuts, meringue pieces and roses. Here I went for the meringue and rose speckles. It was everything you want in a crumble, with seasoned fruit, crunchy crumble then a thick custard perfumed with vanilla. AD | have you ever wanted to take a rock star alon AD | have you ever wanted to take a rock star along with you to a party? Well now's your chance with the latest release from @snowdoniacheese with Rock Star. A vintage Welsh Cheddar aged in slate caves, till just right to eat. This stuff is proper rich and creamy and coats your mouth like a thick clotted cream, leaving a lingering savoury taste. This pairs very well with Snowdonias range of chutneys too, including the Rhubarb and Gin or the Fig and apple, which I tried it with earlier, on top of some buttermilk biscuits from Millers. I think this makes an excellent addition to the @snowdonia range especially when you're fancying a strong cheddar, but don't want to blow your head off with the Black Bomber (if that's ever possible).
Popped to the newly opened @kindle_cardiff today. Popped to the newly opened @kindle_cardiff today. It's been a long time coming so nice to see the place finally open. I used to work across the road and my desk used to overlook the Wardens House and left there 2 years ago. I've not been to Nook in Canton, but it's a similar vibe (same people behind it) with small sharing plates and natural wines. I liked the outdoor area here though just at the entrance of Sophia Gardens, with a working veg and herb garden, being used by the kitchen. We didn't go as wild as we normally would, as we're in London all weekend for Meatopia. What we ordered: - Flat bread with burnt aubergine butter (least fav dish) - Crispy potatoes with confit egg - Artichoke carrot chicken - Lamb ribs galbi (fav dish!) - Quail, champ with gravy - Oatcake, roast apple and rosemary - Cannoli, chocolate and custard. I enjoyed what we did have, although wasn't overly keen on the flatbread. The ribs were lush and I did enjoy the quail, which was a bit like a posh KFC with the fried bird, mash and gravy. Not forgetting the crispy balls of potato, soaked in confit egg. Proper comfort dish those. Was a bit disappointed with the size on the Oatcake dessert, which was £7 for one bite. All in all the food was really good. The food is fresh and seasonal, so expect it to change regularly. This wouldn't be a place to just call in for lunch and definitely a treat, due to the price and amount you get for that. There's a white, red or rose wine by the glass from £6.50, beer or IPA by the glass with half at £2.75 pints at £5.50 Theres 4 cocktails on the menu too, so something for eveyone and can see the list growing, as it was opening day. Price wise again for the cocktails were the most expensive I've seen in town, with the cheapest being £12 for an old fashioned or a prosecco with chambord and £15 for the rum or a gin cocktail. I think it's the natural wines, where they will do well though.
