St Leonards Restaurant Review – Shoreditch, London

I've never really been for food at a restaurant in and around Shoreditch - we usually just grab something out and about in one of the many food markets or street food pop-ups such as Spitalfields or Brick Lane. This time in town, we decided…

What a Budeful seaside town... We spent the weeke What a Budeful seaside town...

We spent the weekend down west a few weeks ago and happened upon the coastal town of Bude, whilst we were there.

It was popular with surfers and was taken by how big some of the waves were there. For those of you who are top heavy and a little challenged in the balance department, they also had a sea pool, to take advantage of.

You can also hire out one of the beach huts and make a day of it and for a bit of shelter.

With Cornish pasty shops aplenty, we called in for a drink in couple of bars including Margarita at Temple and some vino and nibbles at the North Coast Wine Lodge.

We had a good nosey around the antiques and quirky homeward at Satis House, including the taxidermy I've been pondering for our cocktail room in the house. Not sure what I thought of the stuffed chicks though 🤔

Next up is Ireland next week 🇮🇪

Well, after waiting like what seems an eternity, t Well, after waiting like what seems an eternity, to finally get my chops around a burger from @asadoburgers it didn't disappoint 🍔

I meant I had to basically dislocate my jaw to get around the thing, but all part of the fun right?

I went for the El Gaucho Burger on the specials with beef patty, red pepper and fermented chilli chimichuri, provelone cheese, confit garlic mayo, piled with medium rare skirt steak. Oh and I foolishly doubled up, when there was absolutely no need to 🤦‍♂️

The burgers come served with rosemary fries, but you can upgrade with either IPA cheese sauce, smokey pulled beef or both.

If I hadn't been on a two day bender in Bristol and called in on my way back home to Cardiff or had some help, I would have smashed a few of the sides too. Like the beef croquetas and the Morcilla Balls; crispy balls of black pudding with chimichuri mayo for dunking.

It was so nice having the fam out for Sunday lunch It was so nice having the fam out for Sunday lunch at @bunchofgrapescf37 on the weekend. A mixture of my birthday, my sisters birthday and Easter rolled into one, along with it being the one place we all used to go out for Sunday lunch when we were kids with my granch, for a special occasion.

I've been there quite a few times since lockdown for food, or just for a swift half on the way past, but I haven't had a Sunday roast there for a good 10 years.

Depending on how famished you are, you can got for 1 course for £14.50, 2 courses for £19.80 or 3 courses for £22.50.

Starters included:

◇ Soup with house made black garlic
◇ Crispy polenta with pickled mushrooms
◇ Smoked prawns with fennel salad
◇ Pate

I went for the smoked prawns. I've never had smoked prawns before and they added a lovely twist.

The polenta was a hit too and the pickled mushrooms.

Mains included:

◇ Roast rump of beef
◇ Welsh lamb
◇ Chestnut roast
◇ Fish and chips
◇ Pasta

The roasts came with the usual veg and gravy and the beef came with a giant Yorkshire. We were super cheeky and asked for a Yorkshire with the lamb too, which the were happy to entertain so thumbs up there. You can't have a roast without a yorkie can you?

I thought the slices of meat were very generous to be fair, especially the lamb, as I've had roasts recently who were a bit stingy on the lamb. Not just quantity mind, my nan said it was the best lamb she's ever tasted!

Desserts

◇ Olive oil cake with rhubarb
◇ Sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream
◇ Selection of ice creams

I would have liked a few more options on the desserts, if I was being picky. I mean they do the best sticky toffee pudding and I'd eat it every Sunday if I could, but one more option or cheese maybe would have been a welcome addition.

Having had the sticky toffee pudding on my last three visits 😂 I thought I'd try something different with the olive oil cake. I enjoyed it & really liked the Rhubarb addition, but the sticky toffee is still my fav there.

The staff were super lush there as always and there were a great selection of craft on draft. I also say I'm going to get a loaf to take out, but I always forget after I've been fed 🤦

Seeing as the countdown to my birthweek has offici Seeing as the countdown to my birthweek has officially started, I wasn't too much in the mood for cooking today.

Having tried the epic pies at @blueanchorinn back last year, I thought I'd see how their Sunday roasts compared.

Sunday lunch at The Blue Anchor Inn is a 3 course affair, at £21.95.

Starters included celeriac and cardamom soup, ham hock terrine, goats cheese and lentil parcels or mackerel pate.

I opted for the ham hock terrine, with onions chutney and croutes. A meaty ham flecked slab, with capers and herbs, crisped bread and a generous helping of onion chutney.

The usuals on the mains, with roast beef, leg of lamb, chicken supreme, or sea bream and a parsnip and chestnut roast for meat dodgers.

I hate deciding on a roast sometimes, if it also means you sometimes end up losing a fav side dish with the meat. I think all roasts should come with a Yorkshire and stuffing no matter what, meat, but it's usually not the case at most restaurants, with Blue Anchor included.

I did decide on beef, which saw me get a Yorkshire, but missed out on some stuffing. The beef did make up for any shortcomings though, as it was cooked to perfection. Blushing pink, soft and tender, just how it should be.

Sides included carrots, Brocoli, swede, cabbage, boiled new potatoes tossed in herbs and roast potatoes. I would have liked a bit more crisp on the roasties if I was being picky, but overall it was a really good roast.

Spoilt for choice on the desserts. The options included baked passionfuit cheesecake, lemon posset, sticky toffee pudding, pear and almond slice, raspberry and rose creme brulee or Welsh cheese and biscuits.

Normally I can't turn down a sticky toffee pudding, but I'd tried it here last time, so I went for a creme brulee for a change. A thin sugar crisp top, with a welcome addition of raspberries underneath and a hint of rose, but not too overpowering, like it sometimes can be. Oh and the homemade shortbread on the side, was a nice touch too.

If you've not been to Blue Anchor Inn, it's less than 5 mins from Cardiff Airport. Built in the 14th century, this thatched roof marvel has so much character.
I went on my first pub crawl with Derek, around Ba I went on my first pub crawl with Derek, around Barry today. Not much of a pub crawl, as we only made it to 2 pubs, but was great to have a wander around our new hometown, for the first time.

Had a couple of pints in @butterflycollector.barry a wide variety of ciders, a couple of real ales and Mikey Rayer on draught.

Nice and busy in there for a smallish venue and Der had so much loves, he didn't want to leave.

Picked up some handcrafted chocolates, so pretty that you didn't really want to nibble on them from @cocoa_therapy . My fav was the calamansi caramel, coconut ganache inside a white chocolate shell. I paid went to walk out and then the hot cross (bun) bars were calling out my name. Haven't tried that yet, but can't see it making it past midnight in one piece.

I didn't realise you could order food from @goodsheds and eat it in @wearecraftrepublic either (revelation), so we picked on a giant portion of Keralan Fried chicken from @agtukkatuk whilst sampling a few Lervigs.

I then grabbed a @tastypeninsula for the walk home from Goodshed, which I hadn't seen or heard of before. Fried Kuay Teow with prawns, Chinese sausage, egg beansprouts, Chinese chives, finished in crispy pork fat. Lovely bloody jubbly!

I popped in for some lunch at @butty_bach this wee I popped in for some lunch at @butty_bach this week, as I haven't had chance to explore town, since moving.

There's a decent selection to choose from to be fair, with a brunch menu on from 9 till 3, but also the lunchtime options between 12 and 2pm.

I was torn between the pastrami bagel on the lunch menu and the bubble and squeak patties on the brunch menu. Having never been to Butty Bach previously, I was sure what the portions were like and I was a tad hungry, do I opted for the bubble and squeak, with added bacon and beans.

The chef asked if I wanted thin or thick cut bacon, when ordering. Obvs I went for thick, but I was not expecting what came out, that's for sure! I'd hardly call it bacon, more like bacon chop, it was the thickest wedge of bacon I think I've seen, since the sharing breakfast platter at Hawksmoor Guildhall, a few years back.

The bubble and squeak patties, were also on the generous side. Consisting of potato, carrot, cabbage and onion, with Welsh butter, fried till a little chared on the edges. Served with two fried eggs, I'm not sure I needed the beans to be honest, but this was a bloody good feeding, if you're in Barry and feeling peckish.

Can't wait to pop back for the Shakshuka and a pastrami bagel for dessert.

The main menu also kicks in from 4.30pm, till 9.30pm. With a choice of chicken on one side, in a bun or as wings. Then there's an array of burgers available. If the brunch was anything to go by, I'm sure you'll leave not wanting to eat again for at least 12 hours!

Popped into town with the dog for lunch today. Dec Popped into town with the dog for lunch today. Decided to grab a bowl full of freshly handy wrapped dumplings from @pierogi_cardiff

Pierogi are a traditional dish hailing from Poland. I went for the duck, topped with onions and plump sauce. I was surprised just how big and how many dumplings you get and they were bursting with hand minced duck.

I wasn't sure if the raw kale was for garnish or to eat, but I had a nibble in between filling my chops with the plump dumplings, dunked in the sauce.

Other options on the menu were white cottage cheese, potatoes with onions and bacon

Or

Chopped spinach, Greek feta cheese, garlic and white onion

Or vegan option of spiced chickpea, topped with onions, crushed chillies and homemade vegan mayo.

You could see the dumplings being made from scratch behind the perspex too, so you know they are nice and fresh.

Turning into quite the foody spot now, is @cardiffmarket1891 . Great to see such a wide range of different cuisines now, not just your standard sandwich and greasy spoon, that it used to be known for.

The extra seating around the balcony has been a great success if you ask me, but with the sun belting out today, I headed out into the garden across the road and found a bench to eat them on.

We finally managed to sit in and have a proper mea We finally managed to sit in and have a proper meal @thomasbytomsimmons since lockdown. We had a couple of Sunday roasts with their heat at home , which were one of the best Sunday roast we've had (apart from nanny Carole's obvs).

We weren't quite sure on what to have to start, so we basically had a sharing platter of nibbles including:

☆ Mushroom croquettes with truffle mayo
☆ Tea brined fried chicken with lime mayo
☆ Ground bakery bread with house butters
☆ Chicken liver and Madeira parfait, beetroot, brioche
☆ Fillet of beef tartare, confit yolk, truffle, Smoked leek mayo

The crispiest of chicken, which would have paired really well with a cold beer.

The chicken liver parfait a perfectly spherical ball of richness.

I really liked the twist on the beef tartare, with confit egg and the added texture and crunch on top.

I would have had the hand dived scallop, but they were selling like hot cakes all afternoon unfortunately.

For mains I went for Creedy Carver duck breast, leg pastilla, beetroot ketchup and carrot.

Perfectly pink duck breast and that leg pastilla was divine.

On the sides we just had to have Tom's chips, as it's his signature dish and something people drop in just to have with something strong on the side.

They were everything I'd hoped for. A thousand slithers of silky, savoury potato, fried until crisp and golden on the outside. There were more than I was expecting too, to be fair.

@llioangharad opted for the lamb. Lamb cannon , crispy lamb belly and black garlic. The best lamb dish she's ever had and she's tried a few since winning a leg of lamb at Llanfairynghornwy carnival in 1997, on the raffle.

Also on the side we tried the mushroom and truffle mac n cheese. Cheesy, earthy and indulgent. Just as you'd expect. The glazed carrots, with some carrot wizardry on top and toasted seeds for a bit of bite.

We came, we ate, we rolled out. Oh and I nearly forgot clutching a bottle of one of their bottled takeaway cocktails. The Kir royale, which reminded me of an sort of Aviation Spritz, swapping out the usual Marashino for cassis and Prosecco.

We drank it the day after, in bed watching House of Gucci darling 🍾
